Art Spiegelman Short Order Comix #1 "Prisoner on the Hell Planet" Preliminary Artwork Original Art Group of 58 (Head Press, 1973). Before his career-defining breakout work, Maus, first appeared in RAW #2 in 1980, Spiegelman drew on his personal family story in 1973 to produce the four-page comic story "Prisoner on the Hell Planet: A Case History". This group of art contains many of the preliminary sketches and script roughs that were used to produce the piece. In fact, there are 58 pages of prelim artwork and notes in this group! Some are more complete than others, some in color, and some in graphite only. To say that Spiegelman is meticulous could be quite an understatement. The finished work speaks for itself, to be sure; however you can see the power of the story forming as he refines panels and the viewer's POV for increasingly more dramatic and effective storytelling effect. The fact that this work lead to his eventual creation of Maus: A Survivor's Tale, makes this an incredibly important collection of work. Maus has been used in college classrooms for decades now as a prime example of visual storytelling. Most of these pieces are color work on onionskin paper and sizes range from 11.5" x 9" to 4" x 5". On average in Excellent condition, with some in Very Good condition. Go online to to see more pieces from this group and shots of what the finished printed pages looked like. Note: No finished pages are included in this group. They are all prelim artwork only. From the Eric Sack Collection.
