Al Hirschfeld Old Woman in Barroom Signed Trial Proof from Charcoal Drawing (c. 1930s). A hand-pulled "rough proof" in the artist's own words, as inscribed in the margin. This bracing evocation of loneliness amidst conviviality establishes Hirschfeld as an eloquent storyteller-in-pictures -- a distinction quite apart from his greater recognition as a humorous caricaturist. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Signed at lower right, with annotations. Image area, 17.75" x 13.75". Moderate toning and extensive spot-staining. Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
