Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-10-43 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1943). One of Caniff's most popular characters, Army Nurse Taffy Tucker, turns up to provide welcome relief to an overburdened Navy doctor. Meanwhile, the American and Japanese landing forces struggle for possession of a strategic island. A magnificent example of Caniff's early masterpiece feature. Caniff modeled Taffy Tucker after a real-world personality, Bernice Taylor of Kansas -- who celebrated her 95th birthday in 2013 by reading her fictional adventures as Taffy Tucker in The Complete Terry and the Pirates, V5 (Library of American Comics/IDW Publ.; 2008). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 22" x 7", matted to 24.75" x 9.5". Moderate toning and light stain-spattering. Very Good condition.
