    Description

Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-23-35 (Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, 1935). A deep-blue watercolor wash served as a cue for greyscale shading by the engraving plant, but the textured brushstroke-layers of tint prove a mood-building element per se when the artwork is seen in its natural state. The influence of fellow illustrator Noel Sickles is evident in Caniff's evolving grasp of suspenseful shadowplay. Featured here is heroic Pat Ryan, fretting over the well-being of Normandie Drake, one of Caniff's more emphatic leading ladies. Prime-period Caniff, with brisk dialogue to match the propulsive artwork. Not even the serial-movie version of Terry and the Pirates (1940) could match Caniff's drawings for cinematic force. Ink and watercolor over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 5.5" Excellent condition, barring marginal scuffing and toning.
