Leonard Starr Mary Perkins On Stage Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-6-59 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1959). No sooner had the television syndicates successfully revived such 1920s-30s classics as The Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, and Frankenstein, than Starr developed a horror-movie tangent for On Stage, confronting Mary Perkins with a damaged actor-friend named Maximus -- himself a Phantom-type who hides his disfigurement with a handsome job of makeup. Maximus appears here without the disguise, affecting a cloaked demeanor while laughing in a menacing manner. (There also is a resemblance to the Batman comics' chronic antagonist, the Joker.) Thus did Starr find his readership broadened by interest from the first generation of so-called Monster Kid fans. Brilliant stuff, here, with deep shadowplay and intense close-ups and a close-range two-shot. A personalized inscription from Starr appears in Panel 1. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.75" x 6". In Very Good condition, with moderate toning.
