DescriptionL.B. Cole Classics Illustrated #152 Wild Animals I Have Known Story Page 13 Original Art (Gilberton Publ., 1959). Many fans of pre-Comics Code horror will prize Cole's grisly censor-bait cover art from the post-WWII period. Cole's greater artistry, as a naturalistic illustrator, awaits popular rediscovery. A solid starting point is Cole's adaptation of Ernest Thompson Seton's Wild Animals I Have Known (1898), as fine a comic as Classics Illustrated ever issued -- loyal to the author, and rich in interpretive artistry. This evocative page marks the tragic climax of "Wully," the tale of a determined sheep-herding dog. (Seton is remembered today as a pioneer of the Boy Scouting movement.) Pure perfection, down to the finer detail of the stencil-based Leroy Method lettering. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18.5". Light toning. Excellent condition.
