DescriptionKarl Yens "The Desert Claim" Ghost Town Painting (1938). A stunning painting on canvas of a man in the desert by a small adobe type house. The scene in the painting almost seems to depict Walter Knott's early career, when he made a claim/homestead in the Mojave Desert, Death Valley for 160 acres of land in 1914. One has to wonder if he commissioned this painting. This is an original one-of-a-kind painting by German-American artist Karl Yens (1868-1948). He has titled and signed the painting on the back. Karl Yens was a founding member of the California Watercolor Society and a member of the Modern Art Society. He emigrated to the US and settled in Laguna Beach in 1910. Several of his paintings are in the Laguna Beach Art Museum. The painting is on canvas in original frame; the within-frame area measures 39" x 33". The painting has extensive cracking and scratches, and major dirt buildup; restoration will be required. An important painting form Walter Knott's Western Fine Art Collection from Walter Knott and Ghost Town. Fair condition.
