    Description

Karl Yens "A Tragedy" Ghost Town Painting (c. 1940s). When looking at Walter Knott's Western art collection for Ghost Town, one has to be amazed by his high tastes. This is a rare original painting on canvas by Karl Yens (1868-1948), titled "A Tragedy". Mr. Yens was a German-American who was noted for both plein air paintings of the California Impressionist Movement as well as Modernism. He emigrated to the US and settled in Laguna Beach, in close proximity to Knott's in Buena Park. Mr. Yens was a founding member of the California Watercolor Society and a member of the Modern Art Society. Several of his paintings are in the Laguna Beach Art Museum This painting, an impressive image of a Western man leading his horse in front of a wagon, is framed to 62" x 48", with the title and artist's name on the reverse. It is in its original frame, which bears bolt holes from where it was mounted to the Ghost Town wall for security. The canvas has a tear in it near the title, as well as two holes in it, and it needs to be re-stretched. Restoration is needed. Handling and surface wear; Fair/Good condition. An important painting by an important artist!
