Johnny Craig Crime SuspenStories #20 Complete 8-Page Story "Fire Trap" Original Art (EC Publ., 1954). One of EC's last-hurrah triumphs of the pre-Code age -- shortly before the Congressional Fun Police and their fanatical censors would wreck the horror comics as a popular attraction. Writer-artist Craig takes a cue from James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice for a tale of adultery and murder at an equestrian ranch. Impeccably and gruesomely illustrated, the story can only have been calculated to become Censor Bait at a time when the crime-comics industry had nothing to lose by kicking out all the jams of taste and propriety. For an additional touch of in-joke subtlety, Craig modeled the cuckolded husband after fellow comics artist Alex Raymond -- one of Craig's greater influences. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with the Entertaining Comics brand, and an image area of 13" x 18". Excellent condition, with light age-toning.
