John Romita Sr. and Joe Sinnott Sub-Mariner #63 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1973). Sub-Mariner had the distinction of being the very first comic book superhero of the Marvel Universe. He was introduced in Bill Everett's original eight-page Sub-Mariner origin story in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 in April, 1939. Six months later, the story expanded by four pages and eventually saw print in Marvel Comics #1, which is generally considered the first appearance of the mainstream Marvel Universe. On this cover, the Atlantean Prince must defend his realm from multiple catastrophes, including the return of Dr. Hydro, who is pictured in the left area! Ink over blue pencil on cover stock Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Slight toning, with stat logo, header, and text paste-ups. Tape over the issue number and bottom text, moderate production oil staining, staple holes and creasing of the top left corner, with handling wear. In Very Good condition.
