    Description

John Romita Sr. Amazing Spider-Man #51 Cover Kingpin Original Art (Marvel, 1967). One of the finest Amazing Spider-Man covers we have ever had! It was the Kingpin's very first cover appearance, and it set the image of the character in many fan's heads for decades to come. This was just the second appearance for Wilson Fisk (aka "The Kingpin"), and his classy white jacket and purple slacks definitely set him apart from the rest of Spidey's "long underwear" villains. This cover was also an exciting way for John Romita Sr. to kick off his second year on the title. He had taken over from Steve Ditko with issue #39 in August of 1966. JRSR had turned in many spectacular covers before this, but this one is almost definitive of his run on ASM and is as immaculately rendered as any we've seen. The composition, with the ring of thugs focusing the eye down on a beaten and roughed-up Spidey, is a dramatic and iconic Silver Age Marvel masterpiece!
The Kingpin later became a regular antagonist in Frank Miller's Daredevil run, and was masterfully portrayed in the Daredevil Netflix series by Vincent D'Onofrio with an intense and smoldering version of Wilson Fisk that drew on material all the way back to this issue.
This cover art has been in the same collection for almost 30 years, and has never before been offered at public auction.
John Romita Sr. inked his blue pencil work on this twice-up scale cover with an image area of 13.25" x 20.25". The corner box and logo are original unrestored pieces with some vintage production tape affixing the various elements. The lower caption box is the original hand-lettered paste-up. There is a small bit of whiteout art correction on the Kingpin's lapel (to remove a carnation). With only very light toning and a couple of very small bits of extremely light soiling, this is one eye-catching piece that presents as beautifully as any artwork from the era we have ever offered, and is in a high-end Very Good condition.
We are sure you can't wait to get the Kingpin in your clutches!
