John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #136 "Child of Light and Darkness" Page 16 Original Art (Marvel, 1980). The cover to X-Men #136 included a type blurb that read, "...contains more shocks and surprises than ever before" and boy, they weren't kidding. The "Dark Phoenix Saga" has been hailed as "one of the most well-known and heavily referenced stories in mainstream American superhero comics," according to Wikipedia, "and widely considered a classic." Here's a pivotal page from that classic storyline, as Jean Grey is finally free from the hellish powers of the Dark Phoenix after a psychic duel with Xavier, and finds herself in the arms of her true love, Cyclops, who mentally proposes marriage. Ah, but it was a union not meant to be, as all X-Men fans know what was soon to happen afterward.
Prize X-Men pages by John Byrne are among the most desirable pieces of comic art from any period and have been known to pull in some very big numbers, and this unforgettable page is sure to rank up there with the very best of them. It's in ink over graphite with small areas of gray wash and whiteout on Bristol board; the image area measures 10" x 15". The page borders have been trimmed (with one corner clipped), and there is a hint of handling wear, but nothing that really affects the art itself, which remains in Excellent condition. The third panel includes a John Byrne signature, in ink.
If you were a comics fan circa 1980 -- or are a student of superhero comics history -- this page is bigger than big; it's our last real glimpse of a happy Jean Grey, before it all came crashing down for her in the next issue. Like we said before -- unforgettable!
