John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #134 Page 27 Original Art (Marvel, 1980). Comics were about to change forever, as the very next page would see the first appearance of Dark Phoenix. And this page gives us the last phase of Jean Grey's transition. At the start of the page she is reeling and confused, by the end of it a word balloon with her chilling new voice tells us something terrible has happened. You can see why Chris Claremont has held onto this page until now! Between his powerful script, Byrne's characterization and Austin's perfect inking, this page has it all! By the way, per his usual practice Claremont gave his characters no breather, as they had just escaped a wrenching battle with the Hellfire Club a few panels earlier. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". There is production tape over discolored page number stat (27, due to ads, but story Page 16), "Continued..." paste-up on lower right margin, white paint highlights in Panel 1, production tape running down the left margin and the top right corner is trimmed. In Excellent condition. From the Chris Claremont Collection.
