John Byrne and Terry Austin Fantastic Four #286 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1985). The first cover appearance of Phoenix, after she returned from the dead. This appeared a week after her first cameo in Avengers #263, and three weeks before X-Factor #1. To say that all of this was much-hyped at the time is probably an understatement! Of course Marvel was tight-lipped about who the mystery character would be, even releasing a version of the cover with the Jean Grey figure blacked out. It certainly didn't hurt fans' excitement that Byrne's best-known collaborator Austin, not the regular inker on this title, handled the inks on the interior and the cover. In addition to the very special guest star, the whole FF team is on hand here (you'll recall that the She-Hulk was a full-fledged member for a while). Corrections underneath the image area indicate that this cover was originally slated for the previous issue #285. We've heard that X-Factor #1 was produced under tremendous deadline pressure, and speculate that the whole project may have been slated for a month earlier at one point. This piece is in ink on Bristol board, and has an image area of 9.75" x 15". The title logo and the "Collector's Edition..." and "Special Appearance" stats are on an overlay, attached to the board, at the top, with tape. Aside from minor handling wear, the piece is in Excellent condition.
