    Description

Jim Steranko and Joe Sinnott Captain America #111 Double-Splash Page 12-13 Original Art (Marvel, 1969). Jim Steranko pulled out all the stops on this issue's artistic tour de force! During his brief tenure on the title, Jim Steranko only produced three full double-splashes, and this is one of them! The dynamic near-panoramic two-page splash features the World War II Sentinel of Liberty attempting to stop the kidnapping of his new sidekick... Rick Jones (that's an unconscious Rick in the back seat of the car). You don't have to look far to see the Jack Kirby influence on Steranko's interpretation of Kirby's co-creation. Check out that crazy hand-cannon on the left-hand page! ...Or the bold, organic shadows on the car (assisted by Kirby's Fantastic Four inker Joe Sinnott). Rendered in ink over graphite on an oversized Bristol board with an image area of 21" x 15". The board has been folded in half down the center. There is a small 1" x 3" triangle missing from the bottom of the center fold. The missing portion has been professionally recreated, restored, and patched in with rice paper. There are some minor water drop stains in the image area in places. Lightly toned and in Very Good condition. A truly impressive piece!

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
