Jim Aparo The Phantom Stranger #22 Story Page #14 Original Art (DC Comics, 1972). Aparo, one of DC's great all-around utility artists, excelled as keenly at supernatural horror as at superheroic adventure. The Phantom Stranger occupies a strategic middle ground between genres -- a bulwark against evil wizardry, and a dynamic caped protagonist, to boot. Len Wein's script for "Circle of Evil" articulates the argument that mystery-man heroes should not court lady-friends: The bad guys will kidnap them in order to entrap the heroes. Here, the Phantom Stranger has liberated the similarly mysterious Cassandra Craft from "the heart of a crystal globe," only to find a new menace in a brute called Morgg. Aparo's surging split-level composition practically thrusts the reader into the heart of the action. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition, with marginal tape residue.
