Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott Fantastic Four #52 Unused First Black Panther Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1966). Here's a very important piece of Marvel history for all you True Believers -- Jack Kirby's original unused Fantastic Four #52 cover art introducing the first black superhero in mainstream comics, the Black Panther. Many have declared him one of the medium's greatest characters of all time, and he paved the way for such early African-American comic book stars as Marvel's The Falcon and Luke Cage, as well as DC's Black Lightning and John Stewart as the Green Lantern. This incredibly rare first appearance features an early prototype of the Panther's costume, which was later tweaked to include a full face mask. It's a bold, impressive composition that showcases the character in a larger image than the revised version that saw print. Kirby/Sinnott FF twice-up cover originals are considered to be at the tiptop of the comic art collecting field, but this one bests them all, historically speaking. The art is in ink over graphite on standard Sparta Bristol board, with an image area of 13.25" x 20", including the original production masthead logo and price stats. The artboard has tanned a bit, and there is a square hole cut in the top right (covered with a piece of Bristol taped from behind) where the issue number had been. The board has been closely trimmed and there is some handling wear with a few small edge tears, but nothing that will take away from the eye-appeal, once the art has been framed for display (and trust us, you'll want to show this baby off); Good condition overall. This rare cover was first shown in Jungle Action #11 (1974) and has been featured in Alter Ego magazine and various Marvel histories. It's been held in the same collection since the 1970s, and Heritage is proud to present this key piece of Marvel art to auction. We believe this piece will create quite a buzz within the collecting community; it is, shall we say, a true Mighty Marvel Blockbuster!
