    Description

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon Terry and the Pirates #3 Splash Page 1 Boy Explorers Original Art (Harvey, 1947). Oh, the indignities! The Boy Explorers just lost their own book to Terry and the Pirates with this very issue, and now they are not only the last story in the issue, but they are even forced to clean the kitchen in the story "The Isle Where Women Rule!" The 13 page story was split up between issues #3 and 4, but this was the splash page published in #3. Simon and Kirby created the "Kid Gang" comic trope with the Newsboy Legion as sidekicks to the Guardian, based on plenty of examples from pop culture and fiction (i.e. the Bowery Boys, Our Gang, and the Baker Street Irregulars). Kirby went on to create many other examples, including the Boy Commandos, the Boy Explorers, and even the Dingbats of Danger Street. This splash page was rendered twice-up scale in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 12.5" x 18". The printed paste-up logo has glue residue and stains. The toned board is stained in the margins. In Very Good condition.
