    Description

Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers - Tales of Suspense #31 Dr. Doom Prototype Splash Page Original Art (Marvel, 1961). Dr. Doom and the "Monster in the Iron Mask" burst forth on the Marvel scene in the same month, July, 1962. Overstreet cites this splash as a "Dr. Doom prototype." The Monster in the Iron Mask arrived on Earth to pave the way for an invasion; he announced that his one weakness was poison gas, but that his air-tight mask made him immune to such an attack. When a stage magician realized that the monster's mask wasn't really air-tight, and that the Monster had simply tried to trick humanity, the military used tear gas against the monster, and drove him from Earth in defeat! Joe Sinnott inked Doctor Doom's first appearance in Fantastic Four #4, and this page gives an idea of what that first appearance art might have looked like, had darlin' Dick inked it, instead of joltin' Joe! Certainly the Monster in the Iron Mask elicits the same reaction from the Manhattan public as Dr. Doom would -- stark terror! The image area of the splash measures 12.5" x 18.5", and the art is in Excellent condition. Be sure to bid on this triumph from Mighty Marvel and Jack "King" Kirby!
