    Description

Jack Davis Tales From the Crypt #44 Cover Original Art (EC, 1954). Imagine if you will, getting out of school one afternoon in early autumn, 1954. On your meandering way home, you pass the corner drugstore and stop in to see what new "funnybooks" are out. Suddenly, you catch a glimpse of something that sends chills down your spine -- the cover to Tales From the Crypt #44! As you plop down your dime and rush home with the book, you can't help but wonder how to sneak it past the ever-watchful eyes of Mom, who will surely have a fit, should she see this!
Actually, by the time this issue was released, the number of venues offering the latest EC titles was growing slim, as public reaction to the infamous book Seduction of the Innocent was taking its toll, leaving newsdealers fearful of reprisal for carrying such comics. With this gruesome cover by Jack Davis, spotlighting his story, "The Sliceman Cometh," we can understand why. Although the Reign of Terror beheading scene shows no actual blood, the impact is startling, especially when seen through the eyes of a child!
The art is in ink on Bristol board, with an image area of 13.5" x 19.5". Other than some handling wear along the outer borders, the it's in Excellent condition. Place your best bid, but should you be the one to carry this home, be prepared to hide it from Mom -- or your wife!
