Description

Winsor McCay - Political Cartoon Illustration Original Art (c. 1918). Primarily remembered for Little Nemo in Slumberland and Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend, and for pioneering animation with Gertie the Dinosaur, Winsor McCay also was a prolific editorialist. This piece captures Uncle Sam and a Russian soldier clasping hands across the Bering Strait, reflecting brief U.S.-Russia cooperation during the Siberian campaign after the Bolshevik Revolution. Ink over graphite with blue pencil shading on Bristol board with an image area of 16" x 11". Signed at lower right. The board is toned, with pinholes in the top corners, smudging, and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
