Description
Todd McFarlane, Alex Ross, David Finch, and others Wizard: The Comics Magazine Jam Illustration Original Art (Wizard, c. 1990s-00s). Here is the mother of all Jams! Wizard magazine planned a special anniversary jam piece featuring the art of many of the industry's top artists and the characters they are most associated with. Recruiting the best artists, Wizard started with the legendary George Pérez, tapped to create the intricate and star-studded oversized layout, since Pérez was recognized as having a knack for working with large groups of characters (Avengers, New Teen Titans). After Pérez rendered the character composition on the boards in blue pencil, the piece was then sent all over the world to the hottest artists to contribute their key characters to the piece. Throughout the process, the project kept getting held up, and the delays showed that it was just too much trouble to continue shipping the piece to all the various artists, so the unfinished jam landed in the hands of David Finch, who took on the Herculean task of completing the piece, which took him over two years given the size and his attention to detail. With approximately 100 characters taking unified action against what must be a universe-ending threat, this is truly a one-of-a-kind creation that could never be replicated!Parts of the artwork were published in Wizard for an article about the artists of the 90s and the great George Pérez's techniques. Here is a rundown of the highlighted creators and characters:
Central full-figure shots of Spawn and Spider-Man, penciled and inked by Todd McFarlane, who has stated that no other artwork exists with both characters, hand-drawn by him, on the same board!
Superman painted by Alex Ross
Grifter by Travis Charest
Batman by Jim Lee and Scott Williams
The Hanged Man and Jack-in-the-Box (both from Astro City) by Brent Anderson
Wonder Woman, Starfire, Scarlet Witch, Beast, and the Thing by layout artist George Pérez
Savage Dragon by Erik Larsen
Danger Girl, Fairchild, Grunge, Roxie, Burnout, and Rainmaker (Gen 13) by J. Scott Campbell
And David Finch did everyone else! He used Pérez's pencils as a guide, but made sure to add his own touches and make each character his own.
The huge 39" x 22.5" image area consists of three Bristol boards and is matted to a total size of 41.75" x 25.5". The piece has some areas of damage, including some scratches and abrasions, with mended abrasions in the upper image area (through Batgirl) and left side along the board separation (Magneto and Green Lantern). Overall, in Very Good condition.
