    Description

Russ Manning Fantasy-Horror Scene Original Art (1948). A transitional piece in Manning's development as a consummate pulp-style illustrator -- well before his breakthrough as one of the great Tarzan artists. No publishing pedigree is documented. A suggestion is evident of a takeoff on the traditional "along came a spider" nursery-rhyme motif. The legible date (lower right) is ambiguous -- some observers read it as 1943, others as 1948 -- but the latter would peg the artist at 19, an age more in keeping with the relative maturity of the composition and the subtleties of line-weight and Virgil Finlay-like shading/crosshatching. It was in 1948, in fact, that Manning launched a fanzine, Fan Artisan, with fellow artist Jerri Bullock. Ink and white watercolor (candlelight effect) over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 11.75", matted to 15" x 17". Moderately deep age-toning and spot-staining. Very Good condition.
