Rube Goldberg Political Cartoon, dated 2-14-68 (1968). Rube Goldberg was an important comic artist, and this political cartoon (which would be appropriate at just about any era) is nice, but the real story here is where this piece hung for many years. Chasen's was a mega-popular restaurant in West Hollywood that served as a hang-out for many movie stars; it was famous for its chili, of which Elizabeth Taylor was a huge fan. Frank Sinatra, Alfred Hitchcock, Groucho Marx, and Jimmy Stewart had their own booths, as did Ronald Reagan, who proposed to Nancy in his. Founded by former vaudeville and movie comedian Dave Chasen in 1936, the small eatery grew, with new rooms added over the years; this piece hung in the Green Room. The art is in ink, Conte crayon and white-out on textured board, with an image size of 11" x 11.25"; it was inscribed to "my old friend Dave Chasen" by Goldberg. The art is framed with glass as it originally hung at Chasen's, with a frame size of 14.5" x 19.75". A fascinating 2001 newspaper obituary of Dave's widow Maude has been clipped and attached to the back, along with a sticker from the 1999 auction of all the Chasen's memorabilia. Artwork has some edge stains and toning; it's in Good condition. Mr. Chasen, we'll have an order of chili to go, please!
