Rollin Kirby Nice Work, Joe Editorial Commentary Original Art (New York Post, 1939). The German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact of 1939 didn't say anything against aggression toward other nations. Hence Kirby's angered depiction of the symbolic crucifixion of Poland, and the portrayal of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin as partners in mayhem. The "10-year" agreement would fall apart in two years, of course, with the Nazis' invasion of Soviet Russia. Kirby was the very first Pulitzer medalist for editorial cartooning (1922) and a repeat recipient. His stark images of the consequences of unrelieved warfare retain a charge of righteous ferocity. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 15". Faint toning. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
