Description
Robert Crumb Oggie and the Beanstalk Unused Edition Title Page and Introduction Original Art (1973).This wonderful, full-color image of Oggie the Frog was created in 1973 for the publication of one of Robert Crumb's earliest full-length comic strips, a modern-day fable entitled The Yum Yum Book, which was given to Crumb's first wife, Dana, as a present. In 1973, Robert Crumb was struggling. The sales of Underground Comix had hit a low, due in part to recent legislation, giving communities the power to decide what was considered obscene. It was suggested to him that Yum Yum's more innocent tone (Crumb always mentioned that this was completed while he was still a virgin) would go over well, and pull him out of his financial woes. A cover and this title page were worked up, using a revised title of Oggie and the Beanstalk, and a short, hand-lettered introduction page was created (also part of this lot), before Crumb got cold feet and bailed, on both the project and his marriage. Dana later published the book under its original title, and these pages have been kept in private hands ever since. The art was done in ink and colored adhesive-backed film on sketchbook paper, with an image area of approximately 4.5" x 6". The intro page was lettered in ink on paper, with an image area of 4" x 6". The art has some light soiling around the edges of the colored film, and the intro has three words lightly crossed out in ink; otherwise, both average VG condition. Super rare Crumb art! From the Albert Morse, Esq. Collection.
