    Description

Reed Crandall Witzend magazine "A Fighting Man of Mars" Illustration Original Art (Wally Wood Publ., 1967). Fascinating back-story on this stunner: EC Comics veteran Crandall had illustrated Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Fighting Man of Mars for a new edition, but the publisher collapsed, leaving the project in limbo. This piece and its companions landed officially in a Burroughs portfolio series in Wally Wood's DIY anthology, Witzend. (This same art also had appeared without the artist's permission in 1965 as a cover for Erbania #18, a Burroughs fanzine.) The art depicts Martian Princess Dejah Thoris and Earthman warrior John Carter, surrounded by Martian antagonists. Elaborate pen-and-ink crosshatching over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10.5" x 11.5". Marginal toning. Excellent condition.
