Description

Peter Poulton Aztec Sacrificial Scene Unfinished Original Art (1943). Pulp-fiction historian Jane Frank pegs Poulton's career as an SF/fantasy artist as beginning after WWII, but the dating of this fine, partially inked piece indicates a much earlier start. The detailed nude figure and the equally detailed captor (in tribal attire) are inked in a tight, photorealistic pointillist style reminiscent of Weird Tales' Virgil Finlay. A grotesque figure, partially inked at lower right, shows similar attention to detail. The remainder of the art is loosely pencilled, suggesting that Poulton performed most of the heavy lifting in pen-and-ink. The piece is a revelation for those who know Poulton primarily for his men's-magazine cover paintings of the 1950s. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 7.75" x 10.75". Light toning, with random pen-strokes in margins. It has been bent somewhat through the middle, resulting in some light horizontal crease marks on the board from side-to-side. In Very Good condition.
