Description

Oscar Cesare Uncle Sam Original Art (ca. 1930s). A scathing commentary on the Great Depression of the 1930s. A well-armed Uncle Sam (the USA) kicks back with a cocktail and a stogey while observing, by turns, the hedonism that had helped to trigger the economic crisis; the persistent racism; and the suicidal tendencies provoked by the Market Crash of 1929. Meanwhile, comedian Charlie Chaplin looks on from a high vantage (bracing for a plunge?), and an attack dog stands by on a short leash, awaiting orders. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Watercolor (greyscale) and ink wash on illustration board. Image area, 16" x 12", framed out to 21.5" x 17.5. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
