Description

Oscar Cesare - Editorial Cartoons Original Art Group of 2 (The Saturday Evening Post, c. 1910s-1920s). Cesare's power to convey complex political issues in concise images is well represented in this pairing. Both selections are as relevant today as they were a century ago. The larger piece (ink on Bristol board; c. 1925) depicts anti-Evolutionist William Jennings Bryan cringing in fear from a Chicago-based Rabbi, Dr. L.L. Mann, who challenged laws outlawing the teaching of evolution in public schools. The smaller work (watercolors on textured stock; c. 1910s) shows an intimidating God of War feigning affection toward the image of Peace, with this caption: "Publicly, all is sweetness and light." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 12" x 16" and 11.5" x 14". Light to moderate toning. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
