PLATINUM SELECTION!
Osamu Tezuka Astro Boy Kamishibai
Illustration Original Art (Koide Nobuhirosha, 1963). This gem
from the hands of Osamu Tezuka depicts his iconic hero, Astro Boy,
on a scene rendered in kamishibai format. Literally meaning
"street theater with painted illustrations", kamishibai is a
typically Japanese storytelling art based on scrolling images, very
popular in the 1930s, long before the advent of modern manga and
the gradual entry of television into Japanese homes in the early
1950s. The kamishibai were shown by storytellers who would
visit villages and set up a miniature wooden stage, into which they
would slide llustrated pictures and embody the different characters
of the story they were telling. Ink and watercolor on paper with an
image area of 9.5" x 8". Notes in pencil on the back with some
story elements. Small crease in lower left corner. Rare. In
Excellent condition. Note: Japanese writing on the back of the
piece translates roughly as "At that moment, the neighbouring army
attacked. / Astro Boy bravely went on his way all alone / The enemy
was so surprised that he ran away."Osamu Tezuka Astro Boy Illustration Kamishibai Originale (Koide Nobuhirosha, 1963).
More Information: EDIT: Added the rough translation of Japanese writing on the back of the piece.
