    Description

Norman Ritchie, Carl Rose, A.B. Schults, and Roy Nelson Goddess of Liberty and Other Original Art Group of 5 (1890s-1940s). A rich array of comical observations and dramatic illustrations from a fine variety of journalist-cartoonists. Ritchie's Hats off to the Camera (1925) looks back upon the photo album of a family of eccentrics, in a piece reputedly once owned by President Warren G. Harding. Rose (1940s) presents a tough mug applying for a job in a dainty fashion salon -- conflating the "Trimmer Wanted" sign with his reputation as a fighter, or another variety of "trimmer." Schults (1890s-1900s) offers an early view of the Statue of Liberty, here, and a grimly earnest arrest scene, there. And Nelson (1940s) presents a massed caricature of the sports reporters at the Chicago Daily News (with two faces conspicuously obscured). Ink and occasional shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 8" x 11" to 11" x 13". Overall age-toning and scattered staining/handling wear. Average Very Good condition. From the Allan Holtz Collection.
