Description

Larry Todd - Unpublished Intended Cover Painting Original Art (c. 1970). Todd, best known for his Underground Comix character Dr. Atomic, steps into a more painterly role with this richly composed, large-scale, two-layer composition. A ghostly apparition confronts a hippie couple -- funny and scary, in about equal measure. The background occupies a foundation on illustration board, and the foreground (with additional environmental details) is painted in a more cartoonish fashion on a transparent layer, like an animated-cartoon cel. Wrinkling in the cel layer creates a 3-D effect, like a hologram. Inscribed on reverse to collector Harry Knowles, with a sketch of Dr. Atomic. Knowles supplies a large, handwritten COA, explaining the circumstances of his having acquired the piece. Mixed media on illustration board and transparent overlay. Image area, 11.5" x 15.5", matted to 16" x 20". Light scuffing in cel paints. Very Good condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
