Description
Kelly Freas Crazy Magazine #4 "Liberty Leading the People" Page 2 Illustration Original Art (Marvel, 1974). Freas gives a sly, backward-looking twist to Eugene Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People". Seen from behind, Liberty now waves a "Save Fuel / Burn Bras" banner while a young boy grips a gas pump handle, pointed jabs at America's fuel crisis. At her feet lie reels of "missing tape", a not-so-subtle nod to the post-Watergate fallout. Freas originally aimed the satire even higher, first lettering the flag "Burn Nixon", before cooler heads prevailed and the slogan was softened, if only slightly, to "Burn Bras". The sepia tone image was created in mixed media on Bristol board with an image area of 8.25" x 10.75". An acetate overlay modifying the flag text from "Nixon" to "Bras" is present, exhibiting a pronounced midline crease and an onion-skin overlay affixed at the top edge with production notes, losses, and tearing. The board presents light toning, minor creasing, smudging, and handling wear. Signed by Freas in the lower left image area. Overall, in Very Good condition. Comes with a bonus copy of the published magazine (with the feature intact), as well as an additional tearsheet featuring both sides of the two-page feature.More information about Freas, Kelly.
