Jose "Pepe" Gonzalez - Vampirella Original Art (2002). A large-scale knockout from an acknowledged master at mingling terror with enticing glamour. Barcelona-born Gonzalez had bolstered Warren Publishing's fortunes during the 1970s by transforming Vampirella from a cheesecake fantasy into a serialized epic of Gothic/science-fictional horror and the persistence of loyalty. Gonzalez' late-in-life return to the character finds him in as grand a form as he had been during his heyday of 1971-83. This color re-creation of a splash image that appeared in Vampirella #59, as well as being featured on Page 138 of the David Roach book The Art of Jose Gonzalez, was produced in graphite and watercolors to dreamlike effect, with an audacious use of a red earth-toned outline on the character (in place of the customary black or charcoal outline). An evident serial number, PG-832, appears in handwriting on the reverse. Brilliant stuff from a master of emotion-rich characterization: Gonzalez was largely responsible for transforming a throwaway concept from originator Forrest J Ackerman into a sustained narrative epic of Gothic horrors and rare emotional resonance. (Ackerman had intended merely a parody of Jean-Claude Forest's masterpiece of erotic SF comics, Barbarella, from 1962-64, as filmed in 1968 by Roger Vadim.) Gonzalez' signature is integral to the painting. Image area, 18" x 24". Excellent condition.
