Description

John Bolton - Marada the She-Wolf Concept Illustration Original Art (c. 1981). This early concept illustration shows Marada Starhair in her formative stages, as envisioned by co-creators John Bolton and Chris Claremont. Originally conceived as a Red Sonja story, the project shifted course due to complications surrounding the Red Sonja film then in production. Claremont relocated the setting from the Hyborian Age to the Roman Empire and transformed the heroine's fiery red hair into silver, giving birth to Marada. She was first teased in a promotional ad in Bizarre Adventures #27, promising her debut in the next issue -- though publication was delayed, and Marada ultimately made her first full appearance in Epic Illustrated #10 (1982). This illustration captures the silver-haired warrior before she entered the pantheon of sword-and-sorcery heroines, created by Bolton in ink and wash over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 6.75" x 7.5". Light toning, with heavier toning on the edges, light smudging, and light handling wear. In Very Good condition.
