Joe Staton Funky Winkerbean "Starbuck Jones #7 Cover" Illustration Original Art dated 11-10-2013 (North American Syndicate, 2013). When Funky Winkerbean's wife, Holly, decided to try to complete their son's comic book collection while he was stationed in Afghanistan, it allowed series creator Tom Batiuk to start asking his comic book artist friends and idols to create covers for the non-existent comic books Holly was collecting. Here we offer the art from the first of those, "Starbuck Jones #7" cover art created by Joe Staton, featuring his (wounded) robot butler Isaac and hiding behind him, the Moon Mile Meek. The faux-cover is ink over graphite on bright white Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Joe also designed the logo. The logo and other header dressing on this cover are printed paste-ups to complete the faux-cover look. Signed by Staton in the image area and in Excellent condition. Comes with a color print of the published piece. Auctioned to benefit Lisa's Legacy Fund.

    Lisa's Legacy Fund Auction

The Lisa's Legacy Fund was established in 2007 following to raise money for cancer research and education at Cleveland's University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.

Readers of the Funky Winkerbean strip will recall that Lisa was a character in the strip who battled cancer, in a storyline that made writer/artist Tom Batiuk a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Now, Tom is focusing on a new way to raise money for Lisa's Legacy Fund. He's auctioning original art by some of his favorite comic-book artists who in recent years have contributed to Funky Winkerbean by drawing 20 faux covers, to go with a storyline in which Funky's wife tries to complete her son Cory's comic collection while Cory is serving in Iraq.

Tom explains, "I knew I wanted to do a bunch of comic-book covers in Funky and I didn't want to get sued by Marvel or DC, so I said let's do Starbuck Jones. Then I thought, "What if I could get some guys whose work I have admired to create these faux comic book covers?"

If you don't win one of these lots, or if you do and wish to contribute more to Lisa's Legacy Fund, you can do so online at:
