Description
Joe Shuster - Superman Illustration Original Art (undated). Superman goes airborne in this full-figure illustration by his legendary co-creator, Joe Shuster. The classic ingredients are all here: strongman costume, chest shield, flowing cape, spit curl, square jaw, and the explosive pose that helped turn a Depression-era champion into the visual blueprint for the superhero genre. A full-figure Man of Steel by Shuster is already special, and this one adds the extra thrill of flight. That was not part of Superman's earliest vocabulary, when he was famously able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound." Fleischer Studios' 1941 animated shorts helped turn that leap into full-fledged flight, a visual idea the comics soon absorbed into Superman's permanent mythology. The illustration was produced in ink and marker over graphite on 11" x 13.5" paper. Signed in the lower center. It is also signed on the reverse side. The paper is toned with minor wrinkles.
