Description

Joe Shuster Studio Superman Frontispiece Illustration Original Art (DC, c. 1939-41). This page once belonged to Roy Thomas, and according to Wayne Boring's account to Roy: "Joe Shuster laid out this frontispiece. Clue: Face on the upper right panel. Paul Cassidy worked over the prelim sketches - John Sikela drew and inked Super's head(s). Eddie Dobrotka inked the whole thing. Lee Nowak did the linework inside the figure outlines - Joe called this 'slicking' ". Created in the style used on several frontispiece pages from Superman #2 (1939) through Superman #11 (1941), this piece went unpublished until used in DC's 1986 Secret Origins #1, where Roy Thomas gave these credits. Superman art this early and in this kind of condition is extremely rare! Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13.25" x 19", matted to 20" x 25". There is a crease in the lower right corner of the toned board, and minor smudging. The space for the logo and banner text are both blank. In Very Good condition.
