Description

Joe Kotula Bomarc Guided Missile Model Kit Box Cover Illustration Original Art (Aurora, 1958). This gouache on board illustration from the "Famous Fighters" series has an image area of 20.5" x 26", and the artboard has an overall size of 26" x 30". This thunderous Cold War missile launch was painted by Jo Kotula, one of Aurora Plastic Corporation's top aeronautical artists. Kotula's stellar career was outlined by Aurora authority Thomas Graham in Illustration magazine #8, October 2003. Kotula is renowned for what he dubbed "that brilliant sunset quality." He said, "I tried for some jarring contrasts because that was our game, to catch the eye." Kotula sought to avoid anything too mechanical or detailed, and felt that an artist could not hope to compete with the camera lens, and that an obsession with accuracy would often lead to a static composition. Aside from some glue stains and paint daubs in the borders (outside the image area), the art is in Excellent condition.

Please note: Only the original art is included in this lot. The scans of the printed model kit boxes and models are shown only to demonstrate how and where the piece appeared in print.
