    Description

Jim Starlin and Rich Buckler Thanos Concept Illustration Original Art (circa 1971-72). "This is probably one of the first concept drawings of Thanos I ever did," Starlin said about this striking portrait of perhaps his most notable creation, a villain who will be gracing movie screens in the new Avengers film by the time of this auction.
Starlin said the design was done "long before I started working at Marvel," and elaborated "Jack Kirby's Metron is clearly the more dominant influence in this character's look. Not Darkseid. Both [Darkseid and Thanos] started off much smaller than they originally became. This was one of the drawings I had in my portfolio when I was hired by Marvel. It was later inked by Rich Buckler."
With an image area of 10" x 15" this is the size of an original comic cover, and it's an intimidating image indeed!
Signed "Starlin/Buckler" at lower right, and below that it's signed again by both Starlin (in blue ink) and Buckler. Ink over graphite on Bristol, with marker used to fill in some of the large black area. There is a rough pencil sketch of Iron Man's head on the back of the piece. Two small stains at lower right. Some edge creasing. One of Starlin's signatures is smudged. Very Good condition.
