Description

Jeff Smith - Fone, Phoney, and Thorn from Bone Illustration Original Art (1988). Here's the earliest Jeff Smith drawing of Bone characters we've ever offered, created three years before the Cartoon Books series launched in 1991. Bone began as a childhood doodle, then evolved while Smith attended Ohio State University, where he developed the comic strip Thorn for the student newspaper and introduced elements and characters that would later resurface in Bone. In this charming early scene, the rapscallion Phoney Bone lines up a point-blank snowball ambush on Fone Bone, while Thorn Harvestar readies instant payback, a perfect snapshot of the mischief, timing, and personality that would soon make the series a classic. Created in ink and marker over graphite on paper with an image area of 8.5" x 8.75". Frame shadow and faded inks. Signed and dated by Smith in the lower right corner. In Very Good condition.
