Jean Giraud (Moebius) The Snake Woman
Illustration Original Art (1994).A rare and deeply personal Moebius illustration, dedicated in 1994 to François "Faton" Cahen and Clara-an artwork whose significance extends far beyond its exquisite aesthetic qualities.
The drawing embodies the unmistakable visual language of Moebius: elongated, ethereal femininity; fluid, wind-swept hair; organic-mechanical detailing subtly integrated into the figure; and a dreamlike, desert-toned atmosphere suspended between science fiction and myth. The serpentine lower body and hybrid anatomy reflect one of the artist's recurring fascinations-the metamorphosis of the human form into something symbolic, cosmic, and poetic. It is a quintessential Moebius vision: sensual, otherworldly, and refined with luminous watercolor transparency.
What makes this illustration exceptional is the convergence of family, artistic, and historical connections.
François "Faton" Cahen was not only a close collaborator but also Moebius's brother-in-law-brother of Isabelle, Jean Giraud's first wife. In the 1970s, Cahen played a crucial role in the creative ecosystem surrounding Moebius. As artistic director and collaborator within Les Humanoïdes Associés, he contributed to the development and identity of Métal Hurlant, the groundbreaking magazine co-founded by Moebius alongside Philippe Druillet and Jean-Pierre Dionnet. Cahen's involvement helped shape the visual and editorial framework of one of the most influential science fiction publications of the 20th century.
Two years after this dedication, in 1996, Faton Cahen released the CD Calm In The Stars, whose booklet featured a series of Moebius drawings, further cementing the creative dialogue between the two artists. Notably, two tracks on the album were dedicated to Clara-creating a moving artistic triangle between image, music, and family. This illustration thus stands at the intersection of personal tribute and artistic collaboration, closely linked to that musical project.
Few Moebius works carry such layered resonance: a highly characteristic image from his mature period, dedicated to a key figure in his personal and professional circle, and connected to a documented cross-disciplinary collaboration in the mid-1990s.
A unique and intimate Moebius-where family history, the legacy of Métal Hurlant, and the artist's visionary aesthetic converge in a single, luminous work.
Graphite and watercolors on Bristol board with an image area of 7.25" x 10.25". Dedicated, signed and dated. Professionally framed. In Excellent condition.
