Description
Janet Jackson Marvel Age #41 "Stan the Man" Cover Element Original Art (Marvel, 1986). "Excelsior, True Believers!" Here's a real treat from the Marvel Bullpen; a meticulous portrait of Stan "The Man" Lee, painted with incredible precision by Janet "Jay Jay" Jackson for the cover of Marvel Age #41. The issue heralded the return of "Stan's Soapbox" column. Jackson was an artist working in the Marvel offices who was multi-talented, much like fellow Bullpen artist Marie Severin, able to paint, color, and letter, as the job required. She designed many of the titles and logos for Marvel graphic novels and new series. Ms. Jackson (don't say it!) used an earlier (circa 1970s) promotional photo of Lee standing in front of a shelf of Fireside trade paperbacks and Marvel magazines as her inspiration, creating a likeness so clean and crisp that the final printed cover appears to be a photo! Produced in ink wash over graphite on watercolor paper with an image area of 9" x 11". Paper is taped to a heavy board for production purposes. Includes the original rubylith mask, creased, taped to the back of the board. Paper shows slight rippling, less evident with mounting on board. Includes a reproduction of the original promotion still and a smaller color photograph of Lee. Overall in Excellent condition.Auction Info
