Description

Jack Davis Humbug #1 Unpublished Gag Illustration Original Art (Humbug Publications, 1957). Jack Davis turned in his first few "...and you know who gets killed" gags, as created in ink with lovely ink wash. Sadly, writer/creator Harvey Kurtzman discovered that the delicate ink wash would come out too muddy for publication. As such, Jack Davis had to re-draw each of the gags he had already completed, except in an all-ink linework format. This is the unpublished ink wash version of the war movie gag "Last Days of Combat". For many collectors, this mid to late 1950s style, abounding with detail and technical flourish-which is exemplified in all of his Humbug art-represents the true highpoint of Davis' long, fabled career. The soft and subtle ink work was created over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 14" x 9". Comes with a tear sheet of the published version of this gag. In Very Good condition.
