    Description

Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman Unpublished Hexaflexagon Game Illustration Original Art Group (c. 1957). Sight gags, paradoxes, and visual games have always been a part of Mad-man Harvey Kurtzman's humor. Slated for Hugh Hefner's never-published Trump #3, the "Exaltation" would have been Kurtzman's most elaborate visual game ever. As described in Joey Anuff's in-depth Winter 2005 feature article for Comic Art #7, "The mechanics of the game were based on game master Martin Gardner's column for the December 1956 issue of Scientific American." There was one crucial difference though. Kurtzman's version featured hilarious "mix and match," sexy Jack Davis illustrations rather than mere geometric patterns. Included here are the three "main" framed hexagonal Davis finished illustrations that the game was built around, each with an approximate image area of 7.5" x 5". Also included are a combination of Davis' original art (including four more unframed finished pieces: the woman in bikini; two drawings of various beach items; and the drawing of the cars circling with tissue overlay), another Davis preliminary (the woman in bikini fold-out), two working mock-up models for the game done in Kurtzman's hand (the blue and yellow fold-outs), and eight pieces of production art and stats, for a total of 15 "auxiliary pieces," each with an overall size of 8" x 11". This artwork for an incredibly ambitious project offers a fascinating an unparalleled view into Kurtzman's post-Mad world. For more information on how the game actually worked, please consult Mr. Anuff's Comic Art article -- we can't get past the gorgeous Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman art. The art averages Excellent condition.
