Description

Jack Abel - Marvel Treasury Edition #25 Inside Back Cover Illustration Original Art (1979). Marvel's Winter Olympics treasury ended with a house ad for an upcoming issue with a Summer Olympics story. The text accompanying this image read, "Coming This Summer ... Marvel Super-Heroes at the Summer Olympics. Guaranteed to be the most awesome assemblage of heroes ever seen in one titanic tale!" But alas, in 1980, the United States boycotted the Moscow Summer Olympics, causing the treasury edition advertised here to be canceled. However, the story was reworked to become the first Marvel limited series, the three-issue Contest of Champions, in 1982. The image offered here, inked by Abel and penciled by an unknown hand, was changed around and re-drawn for issue 1 page 1 of Contest of Champions. This might be the first printed appearance of Sabra (rumored to be in the upcoming Captain America movie) as well as Blitzkrieg (to the right of Captain America on the image), Shamrock, Defensor (to the right of Black Panther), Talisman (to the right of Sunfire), and Arabian Knight. Ink over graphite on 11" x 17" Bristol board. Toning, with spot staining and creasing/handling wear. Signed by Abel at the bottom right and in Very Good condition.
