Description
Henry Patrick Raleigh Parlor Setting Original Illustration (c. 1920s). A richly emotional scene from Raleigh's heyday as a front-runner in the Golden Age of American Illustration. The artist had broken through to prominence early in the last century with an assignment to illustrate H.G. Wells' Bealby for Collier's magazine. Raleigh's high-roller years would last into the 1930s, when changing tastes pronounced his work old-fashioned. Such old-fashioned-ness is part of the greater charm in this cryptic piece (lacking documentation of a publishing pedigree), coupled with a progressive flair for wild flourishes of pencil-stroke Impressionism. A lower-edge caption is similarly cryptic, as is a shard of handwriting at upper margin. Image area, approximately 18" x 12". Moderate toning and light natural smudging, with marginal adhesive staining. Very Good condition.More information about Henry Patrick Raleigh.
