Description
Henry Patrick Raleigh Nighttime Horse-and-Carriage Scene Original Illustration (c. 1920s). Raleigh's drawings of high-society life defined the Gatsby era and placed him among the big-money magazine artists of the 1920s-30s. The present selection, a departure from his familiar setting of glamour and gaiety, finds Raleigh adept at suspenseful, even ominous, mood-building. The publishing pedigree is undocumented, save for a few handwritten lines of engraving instructions. A likely venue would be The Saturday Evening Post, Raleigh's most prominent outlet. The distinctive signature appears in white-on-black (chalk) at lower right. Charcoal and tinted chalk on textured page-stock. Dimensions, 19" x 13". Smudged margins, with fragments of what had been a framing matte. Very Good condition.More information about Henry Patrick Raleigh.
