Description
Hal Foster Tarzan Panel Signed by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Hal Foster Original Art dated 6-16-35 (United Feature Syndicate, 1935). Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 18, 1892, Hal Foster labored as a prize fighter and gold prospector before beginning his artistic training at the Chicago Art Institute in 1921. Originally working on magazine illustrations and advertising posters, Foster became an assistant to J. Allen St. John, one of the top illustrators of his time, and the artist most associated with Tarzan. Essentially being in the right place at the right time, Foster was offered a brief stint on the new Tarzan comic strip, becoming the permanent artist in 1931. Offered here is a prime example of Foster's work, featuring the closing panel of "The Viking Foe" episode. Originally part of a larger page, it was common for Foster to cut panels from his strips and send them to fans. Measuring approximately 6.5" x 5.5", aside from overall aging, this ink on Bristol panel is in Very Good condition. It's a superb example of Foster's draftsmanship, and this panel has been inscribed and signed by both Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, and Hal Foster.More information about Hal Foster.
